In 1906 Miltown Malbay won their second county title, defeating Ennistymon in the final.

A few days after their victory the Miltown team accompanied their team-mate Martin O Connor to the West Clare Railway station where he embarked on his journey to Australia. In his pocket was his precious football medal. It is not known if Martin ever returned home because in those days when people went to Australia or America they went for life.

Many decades passed and the fate of Martin O Connor and his medal was forgotten.

However, there was still a twist in the tale. A couple from Kilmurry Ibrickane who had emigrated to Australia were out shopping in Sydney. The man was browsing in a nick-nack shop containing books, furniture, pictures and in the corner lay old discarded medals. On looking through the medals some familiar ones with harps caught his eye. When he examined them closer one stood out - St Joseph’s County Clare 1906. He immediately knew that the medal would be of great sentimental value. In those days many players from Kilmurry would have played with Miltown as Kilmurry didn’t have the numbers for a team of their own. He purchased the meal for an unknown sum and years later returned to Quilty on holidays. He showed the medal to various people but there was no great interest in it.
Before returning to Australia he gave the medal to Michael Talty who was the Chairman of Kilmurry Ibrickane football club at the time. Michael subsequently gave the medal to Cyril Jones. Luckily at the time the names of the players were printed on the back and Cyril was able to check historical records and establish that there was indeed a Martin O Connor from Miltown playing on that team.

The cup that was presented to the team winning the County Final was known as The Redmond Cup. While this particular medal  found its way back to Miltown, the location of the Redmond Cup has remained a mystery ever since.

Thanks to Patsy Jones for providing this amazing story that her husband Cyril had carefully recorded
