Today, 18th April 2020, our club had intended to commemorate two former club members and county championship winning footballers, Paddy Hennessy and Thomas Leary, who lost their lives 100 years ago on the 14th April 2020. Along with John O'Loughlin, Paddy Hennessy and Thomas Leary were indiscriminately and brutally murdered by Crown Forces at Canada Cross when Crown Forces opened fire on an unarmed gathering of civilians who were peacefully celebrating the release of republican hunger strikers from Mountjoy Jail earlier that day. Along with the killing of these three unarmed men, 14 civilians were injured including two school children.

Thomas Leary (pictured in this article) won two county championships with Miltown. He lined out in the full forward line in the 1905 final and in defence in the 1906 final in which Miltown defeated Ennistymon on a scoreline of 0-13 to 0-8 at the Showgrounds in Ennis,

Paddy played for Clare in the 1912, 1916 and 1917 Munster football finals. He was corner back on the Clare team that played in the 1917 All Ireland Senior Football final losing to Wexford by 4 points. Clare had defeated Cork in the Munster Final on a score of 5-4 to 0-1 of that year. Paddy had been part of the Miltown team who defeated Cooraclare 3-2 to 2-2 in the 1916 county final.

Our senior team were due to play Clondegad in the Cusack Cup today 18th April. It was planned to commemorate the memory of both Paddy and Thomas prior to the commencement ofthe match. This commemoration will now take place at a suitable date in the future.
