2023 Senior Championship Round 1

Miltown 1-14 Doonbeg 0-14

Pur Senior side got their quest for Jack Daly off to a winning start on Friday evening with a hard-fought victory over Doonbeg in testing conditions in Cooraclare.

Playing with the aid of a slight breeze Miltown played well and kept the scoreboard operators busy with some fine points from play, frees and a mark. Cian Mahony (4) & Cormac Murray (4) were to the fore in the scoring stakes accounting for 8 of 10 scores from Miltown in the first half with Cian Flanagan & Darragh McDonagh also getting in on the act. Doonbeg kept in touch however with 3 points from play and 4 frees to leave 3 points between the sides as Barry Keating blew the half time whistle.

The conditions worsened in the second half as Miltown faced into the often-driving rain and strengthening wind. Scores were harder to come by but once again Cormac Murray (2) & Cian Mahony (2) were able to add to the Miltown tally of points. Doonbeg created a number of scoring chances playing with the wind and reeled in the Miltown lead to 2 points as the 30-minute mark approached. It was then that Cian Mahony with a smart finish found the back of the net for the decisive score and despite Doonbeg piling on the pressure the Miltown defence held firm and the final whistle gave our lads a great start to their championship campaign.
