Our Seniors travelled to Lissycasey to take part the annual Brian Casey memorial 7 a side tournament. They were pitted against Kilmihil, Coolmeen and Lissycasey 1 in the group stages.
In their first game, Miltown started poorly and found themselves trailing Kilmihil 1-2 to 0-3 at half time. An improved second half performance against the breeze which included a goal from Tayto, saw Miltown prevail on a scoreline of 1-8 to 1-6.
In the next group game, Miltown faced Coolmeen and started well. First half goals from Euan Reidy, Micheal Murray and Aidan McGuane saw Miltown lead at half time on a scoreline of 3-4 to 0-2. Our Seniors continued to perform strongly in the second half with goals from David Talty and Joe Carmody ensuring they prevailed 5-6 to 0-2.
With Tayto and Aidan McGuane carrying knocks, Miltown opted to rest both in their final group game against Lissycasey 1. Miltown played poorly in the first half however rallied in the second half with a goal from Micheal Murray. As the game drew to a finish, the Lissycasey 1 goalkeeper Killian Normoyle expertly saved an Oisin Looney penalty ensuring Lissycasey 1 prevailed by five points.
Qualifying as group runners up, Miltown faced Kildysart in the semi final. An early Brian Curtin goal ensured Miltown led at half time on a scoreline of 1-6 to 0-3. With an impressive display of pace and power, Miltown gave their best performance of the tournament running out winners on a scoreline of 1-11 of 0-4
Lissycasey 2 prevailed against Lissycasey 1 in the other semi final ensuring that Miltown would face Lissycasey 2 in the final. Our Seniors started well with a number of impressive points and entered the break winning on a scoreline of 0-5 to 0-2. Miltown continued their impressive display with a good start to the second half which saw Enda O Gorman make a powerful run through the Lissycasey defence where he was fouled for a penalty. Unfortunately Sean Malone was unable to find the net from the spot with Paudie Carmody in the Lissycasey goal making an impressive save. A defensive mix up with three minutes to go saw Lissycasey find the net and level the game. As the game drew to a finish, Miltown's goalkeeper Ger Malone kicked a 35m free to ensure our Seniors prevailed on a scoreline of 0-7 to 1-3.
Captain for the day, Brian Curtin accepted the trophy on behalf of the Miltown team, thanking the organisers of the tournament and Lissycasey GAA while speaking eloquently about who the tournament was in memory of, namely Brian Casey, David McMahon and Michael Melican.
